TV journalist raped and murdered | ZEIT ONLINE

In Bulgaria, a TVN presenter TVN has been raped and killed. The body of 30-year-old Viktorija Marinowa was found in a park on the Danube river town of Russe, according to a report by the state broadcaster BNT. She was said to have been beaten, raped and then strangled. According to the report, the district prosecutor Georgi Georgiev said the police are investigating both professional and possible personal reasons for the murder. The police investigate in all directions.
According to media reports, authorities have so far found no direct link between the crime and Marinowa's work. Interior Minister Mladen Marinov confirmed the rape. Prime Minister Boiko Borisov said that the best criminologists had been sent to Russia to clarify the facts.
The online news portal Politico reports that Marinova's latest program "Detector" is about research by several Bulgarian journalists on government-sponsored, EU-funded infrastructure projects. According to this, 30 to 40 per cent of the subsidies should be infiltrated by corruption. After Maltese Daphne Caruana Galizia and Slovak Ján Kuciak, Marinowa is already the third journalist to be murdered in an EU Member State this year. According to the British Guardian, Marinowa's program had recently been launched.
According to the organization Reporters Without Borders, on average, every week a journalist is murdered in the world. Bulgaria is currently in 111th place in the world ranking on press freedom, and thus has the worst rating of all EU countries. Violence against women is also widespread in the southeastern European country.
